Hello! Mein Name ist Karo. Schön euch kennen zu lernen!
Ich habe diesen Blog ins Leben gerufen um meiner Nerdigkeit zu frönen und meine Begeisterung für gute Geschichten zu teilen. In diesem Sinne: Allons-y!
There are lots of books called 'Lock and Key'. Most of them are steamy love-stories or erotic novels. This however is not one of them. 'Lock and Key' by Ridley Pearson is a detective story featuring Sherlock Holmes and James Moriarty as teenagers at a boarding school. The story is narrated by Moriarty's younger sister, Moria, who is torn between the allegiance to her older brother and the friendship with the brilliant, yet annoying, Sherlock Holmes. The story, which revolves around secret societies, hidden clues and - yes - murder is fast paced, entertaining and really exciting. Especially towards the end I couldn't put this book down. There are, however, some things that bothered me here. Firstly the characters lacked a bit of depth. But since this book is written for a younger audience, I can overlook this in favour of a thrilling mystery. But the thing that didn't work for me at all was that the story was supposed to take place in our present times but didn't feel like it. Firstly everybody in this book talked in a very outdated way - especially Sherlock, who seemed to be a victorian gentlemen trapped in the body of a teenaged boy. Secondly the setting at an old fashioned school took away everything that could feel modern - mobile phones aren't allowed there for example. Why then bother to put the story in our times at all? I think, setting Sherlock Holmes stories in the present day does only ever work or make sense if the protagonists interact with the times they are put in. Meaning: If you tell a Sherlock Holmes story in the present day, Holmes should make use of the tools this time-period offers, instead of relying on methods and manners from victorian sleuthing. For instance: using the internet or mobile phones to get information and communicate etc. This doesn't happen here, which is a shame.
Bookwormproblems: Enjoying a book-series so much that you can't stop reading it, but then immediately regretting reading it so fast, because now it's all over and you have to say goodbye 😢 This is exactly how it went for me with the 'Truly Devious' books by Maureen Johnson. It is a cool combination of cosy-crime and highschool drama, which is extremely entertaining. The mystery - it is really two intertwined cases - is excellently plotted, with lots of twists and turns, red herrings and the right amount of hiding and revealing. This was great fun! I can't wait for the characters to return this summer in Johnson's new book 'The Box in the Woods'! #bookstagram #igreads #MaureenJohnson #trulydevious #bookwormproblems #books #bücher #lesen #bücherliebe #cosyrime #krimi #cozycrime #reading #booklover #leseliebe#mysterybooks #detectivestories #ellinghamacademy #buchblogger #bookblogger #instabooks #booksofinstagram
Who needs a gym when you can gain muscle mass by lifting 900 pages of sherlockian goodness!? This huge collection, edited by Otto Penzler, is the newest addition to my bookshelf. It contains - as the title suggests - over 80 stories featuring the greatest detective of all time. Among the many authors featured in this collection are Lyndsay Faye, Neil Gaiman, P.G Wodehouse, A.A. Milne and Arthur Conan Doyle himself, who apparently couldn't resist to write a Sherlock Holmes parody 😁 I can't wait to delve into this superb collection! 🕵️♀️ #sherlockiansofinstagram #SherlockHolmes #221bbakerstreet #221b #holmes #Sherlock #ottopenzler #newbooks #bookblogger #buchblogger #bücherliebe #booklover #bookshelf #igreads #bookstagram #books #buchliebe #booklover #detectivestory #Sherlockianbooks #Sherlockian
What happens when you combine boredom, DIY enthusiasm and a Sherlock Holmes Nerd? This 👆 It's a lightbox made out of a picture frame and a LED-strip. Super easy to make. There's a tutorial on my blog (it's written in German, but if you don't speak the language, the pictures in the article might be helpful as well). The link is in the Linktree.
It's Sherlock Holmes' birthday today! (At least Christopher Morley - a famous Sherlockian - said so. So we're celebrating!) This is a great excuse to show you my Sherlock Holmes collection, which grew quite a lot over the last couple of years (as you can see in the slides). It contains several editions of the brilliant stories by Arthur Conan Doyle as well as parodies, graphic novels, non-fiction books and - my greatest passion and guilty pleasure - pastiches. So here's to the greatest detective of them all, whose adventures brought and bring endless joy to me and thousands of Sherlockians around the world! 🥂
My sister got me this tote bag for Christmas 😁 And if it isn't the greatest bag ever created, I don't know what is 🍷
Favourite books of 2020 🎉 Short version:
Happy Christmas and all that shizz! I hope you have a good and merry one! I'll spend the rest of this festive season snuggled up on the sofa with the huge pile of books I bought in an 'Oh my God, there's gonna be a new lockdown, I need to prep'-bookshopping-spree. And Santa brought some as well! I'll be busy till next Christmas, I guess. See you then! 👋 #messyhairdontcare #messybookshelfcareevenless
Still one of my favourite little DIY Projects: Christmas Baubles filled with book quotes. I have some with Sherlock Holmes and Harry Potter and Matt Haig quotes. But this one here was the first one I made and it remains my favourite. The quotes inside are from the greatest Christmas story of all time: 'A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens. What is your favourite Christmas story? 🎀
